This was supposed to be the year! The year in which you got off the carousel of repetition that is your life, your career and your finances. This was going to be the year you forged new opportunities for yourself and smashed the glass ceiling that your job,m your career and your finances were placing over your prospects. But despite all of your noble intentions, almost a month into the year you’re still on the carousel.

Why? Because getting off is hard!

There’s no denying that when you’re leading a busy lifestyle it can seem as though the carousel is moving too fast to get off. And when you’re earning enough to get by it can lull us into a sense of complacency. Moreover, we can fall into the trap of making excuses to ourselves that limit our potential and can even inhibit our earnings. However you planned to change your lot in 2019; whether through a side hustle, a new job or a qualification that will unlock the path to a new career, these excuses can cause you to fall asleep at the wheel.

Well, no more! Here are the 3 excuses you’re absolutely not allowed to make to yourself in 2019…

I don’t have the time

When you work full time there’s no denying that it can be difficult to set time aside for yourself to allow you to attend networking events, go to night school, work on your side hustle or whatever you need to do to blow the roof off your potential and your earnings. However, if you don’t have the time, you’re going to have to make the time.

Get up at 5am and work on your side hustle, your website or your thesis. Not only will you find that you have more energy during the day it also makes for a more leisurely start to the day than racing out the door with a thermos of coffee in your hand and a slice of burnt toast between your teeth.

Do your meal prep over the weekend and freeze as much as you can to reduce the time you spend cooking. Call in a favour and ask a colleague to cover for you while you leave work early. If you want it badly enough, you’ll find the time from somewhere!

I’m too busy

If you’re juggling work, kids and the quotidian domestic responsibilities we all have, it can be extremely difficult getting the time you need to dedicate to growing your skills, your career and your income. That’s why it’s important to value flexibility. Take, for example, the wealth of online learning that’s out there. Today you can study anything from a MA in history to an online advanced social work degree at a fraction of the cost of a campus course. Plus with the flexibility to fit around your work and family commitments.

I don’t have the energy

We tend to act as though energy is a gift given to us by a capricious higher power and that we have no control over how much of it we have. If you feel like your energy levels are consistently low, you may need to rethink your diet and how much water you’re drinking. When we address these simple but fundamental issues, it’s amazing the wealth of energy reserves we can find ourselves with.
