Learning a new skill is one of the best ways to empower and challenge yourself. It can open up new avenues of your personality and thought that you’ve never seen before. We’re going to take a look at four skills that everyone should consider; most of us even have the potential to learn all four, if you really want to feel like a badass.
A new language
Being able to speak a new language has a lot more benefits than you think. For some, it’s all about being able to communicate better with people from other countries and cultures, as well as being able to travel in new locations with much more confidence. While this is very important, learning a new language can actually improve your thinking skills, as well as deepen your knowledge of your own native tongue. A lot of people assume that English, being the current lingua franca, is pretty much the only language you’ll ever need. But even if you don’t end up having to use a different language, it’s still a really useful, world-expanding, and impressive skill to have.
Creative writing
Maybe you have an idea for a short story, a novel, or a comic. Either way, it can be a very tough process getting it all down on paper, even for professionals. Turning your ideas into enjoyable sentences with the right pacing and structure is harder than people think; it requires practice and a lot of mental stamina. So you may want to consider taking some creative writing lessons. If you don’t want to take that route, then try getting some books that feature advice for writers. The most important thing, however, is that you write! Don’t spend ages worrying about it not being perfect. The more you write, the more you’ll improve.
Music creation
Learning how to play a musical instrument not boosts your self-esteem and makes you look pretty impressive; it can also potentially open a new career path for you, just as some of the other suggestions can. The most popular instrument is the guitar. A lot of people may be tempted to teach themselves how to play, but it’s probably better for you to work with a guitar teacher. Of course, you’re not just limited to traditional instruments. If you have a computer, a keyboard, and the right digital audio workstation, then you can make music. Learn some music theory and get to grips with using the software and you can get creating.
Self-defence
Don’t underestimate the importance of being able to defend yourself effectively and while inflicting minimal serious damage upon other people! Those who don’t feel that confident when they’re out at night or in particularly heated situations can definitely give themselves a boost by taking some self-defence classes. It’s important to know that sheer strength isn’t what’s important, although it can definitely help. (Besides, exercise is good for a lot of other reasons!) You actually tend to use your ‘assailants’ strength against themselves. Skills in self-defence are something more people should be versed in – oddly enough, we’d probably see a lot less violence in the streets!
