Care For Your Equipment
Your tools are essential for you to be able to work, and it’s not cheap to buy quality tools. Having to buy new tools because you lost or broke something is not good, so care for your tools so they last longer. Make sure that when you finish working with a tool that you clean it and store it properly. Tools are a temptation to thieves too, so make sure you have somewhere secure to store your tools. Never leave any tools in your van overnight, or leave them lying around on your work site.
Make sure you get insurance from a specialist company so you can claim if you do need to replace something. Depending on your trade, you might need specific insurance like electrician's insurance to protect you as well.
Claim Back Expenses
If you’re self-employed, you need to file your own tax return, which can help you to save some money. Make sure that when you file that you understand exactly what expenses you can claim as an expense. Everything that your business earns and spends needs to be clearly recorded, and always save your receipts. As a general rule, if you spent the money for your business, you can claim it back. For example, if you spent money an new business cards or an update to your website, this would be an expense you can claim back.
If you find sorting out your taxes a headache, you should get help from an accountant. While you will have to pay for this service, it does mean you’re getting expert help, so you won’t miss out on any claimable expenses or get stuck with fines for accidentally not paying enough tax. If you’re not wrestling with your tax return for days, you also have more time to actually work and earn money.
Audit Your Outgoings
Take a thorough look at your bank account and take a note of everything that you’re spending every month. Are you able to reduce any of your regular spending, or are you paying for something you don’t need? Are you overspending on memberships that you never use? Have you spent more than you should on advertising that didn’t pay off? Where can you make savings?
Do the same for your personal budget and expenses too. Can you save yourself some money by taking lunch to work with you instead of buying it while you’re out? Could you change your mobile phone contact to a cheaper deal? Find areas where you can cut back, and you can make some substantial savings.
