There’s a certain fascination for all fitness addicts when they watch the Rocky films with Sylvester Stallone. Ultimately, you may not be a boxing enthusiast, but there’s no denying that Sly did look strong and hyper fit in the first Rocky. In fact, even though he was 60 for the sixth film of the Rocky series, he maintained an active and fit appearance. So, it’s easy to feel inspired by Rocky Balboa workout on screen. After all, if it works for you, why wouldn’t it work for you? Let’s get things clear from the start. It will take more than watching Rocky to get into boxing. But you can certainly learn a few tips from the iconic series. Are you ready to unleash your boxing fitness regime? Here’s what it takes to make the most of it.

You don’t just start boxing; you train for it

While Rocky is the story of a boxer, you have probably noticed that a vast majority of the training scenes have very little to do with boxing. And there’s a valuable lesson for you to learn. There’s more than boxing in boxing. It’s above all cardio training. Start with one of the most famous workout scenes, the distance run through Philadelphia, which includes all of the 72 steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You can replace it with a healthy job in town, and remember to add the one-arm pushups and Roman Chair situps at the end. You’ll find plenty of strength training in Rocky, from Sledgehammer swings to Barbell lunges – for which you don’t have to use a log like portrayed in the second film – so make sure to add strength to your cardio workout.

Your boxing gear

Training is one thing. Using the proper gear is equally important, especially in high contact sports like boxing. You can’t box without a mouthguard, but thankfully if you’re worried about finding the right one for your jaw, you can design your own mouthguard with Safejawz. It fits and it’s fun at the same time, so you’ll be sure not to forget to protect your mouth. The other area you need to protect is your hands, with wraps that you can wear for simple practice and underneath your gloves too. They will protect small bones and tendons from the pressure of hits, and ultimately reduce the risk of injury.

Not just training, there’s the diet too

You’ve probably noticed that Rocky follows a specific diet when he’s training, including the ingestion of raw eggs before his workout. It doesn’t matter how inspired you feel by the films, you’d better stay off the raw egg delicatessen for now as salmonella remains a potential risk factor. Instead, you can use protein shakes which will give your body the energy it needs. Not only are these safe, but, it means you don’t have to go everywhere with a box of raw eggs in your gym bag. If you want to maximise the results of your training, you need to increase your protein intake and reduce fat and carb consumption.

Are you ready to release your inner Rocky and improve your fitness? Beware though; boxing is an intense activity that combines cardio and strength exercises, safety precaution, and the right diet if you want to shred your body. Don’t just buy a pair of gloves and hope for the best!
