If you are moving into the property market for the first time then you are a buyer who has some things that you need to learn. Buying a property can be quite the minefield, and there will be a lot of things in your way when you decide to buy one.

You should consider the fact that buying a property especially for the first time comes with a lot of pitfalls and a lot of stress, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun. As long as you have a seasoned mortgage broker in your corner, buying a property is going to be one of the best things that you do for yourself. Whether it's getting a mortgage or choosing a real estate agent, there are some things out there that you need to know before you start buying a house for the very first time.

  • What can you afford? The very first thing that you need to know as a property owner is what you can afford. Homes cost a lot of money, so you'll need a home loan or a mortgage to foot the bill along with a massive down payment. You then need to figure out what price of house you can really afford and how much your deposit is going to be. Going beyond that, once you get your mortgage, can you figure out the upkeep? From the rates you might pay on the House to insurance, maintenance and council tax, you have a lot to consider.
  • Have you got the right real estate agent? Most of the time, you buy things yourself. You shop online and you'll look through catalogs annually and place your order for what you want. Quite the same when it comes to the house. Buying a house requires the transfer of a deed, or build, a title search and plenty of other paperwork. Your mortgage broker can help you with most of that because they'll be able to point you in the right direction of who to ask. But when it comes to buying the house itself you need a good real estate agent. You want to have somebody that you can trust to explain the in's and outs of the process to you.
  • You should never look for perfection. There's actually no such thing as the perfect time, because even a new build can come in some problems. You need to ensure that you find somewhere that is standing, is not in a flood zone, and is not at risk of being burned down by a fire every year. If you find a great neighborhood, for houses may be too expensive but if you find a cheaper neighborhood where the houses you can afford, the neighborhood may be riddled with crime. Instead of looking for perfection, finding a house that suits you and your budget for right now means that you have a house. It may not be a forever home but it's a good place to begin.
  • Do your homework. If you find somewhere that you love and you make an offer and that gets accepted, congratulations. But don't do anything until you've done your due diligence to make sure that the house is in one piece, and that means you need a surveyor. The survey that you get is going to help you with your house and they're going to make sure that you don't have to move into somewhere where the foundations are crumbling.
