How Does Receipt Hog Work?

Getting paid to shop is a dream to many, but it's a reality for Receipt Hog users. Every time they leave the house to make a purchase, they can earn money back. Just like how you can earn money from cashback sites, Receipt Hog guarantees you something in return for your purchases, and the value increases with your spend.

If you’re committed and log regularly, you will be rewarded with cash-convertible ‘coins’. These come from your everyday receipt logs as well as Hog Slot spins, which will reward you with coins and regular sweepstakes. Fun times.

For a receipt worth under £10, you get 5 coins. £10-£50 will result in 10. £50-£100 gets you 15. Over £100 and you get 20. It’s completely illogical, but the money is free.

Where Can I Earn Points?

Not all receipts are made equally. In fact, there are a few places where they’re invalid, as I found earlier on. Cinema and Royal Mail receipts can’t run around here. However, there are plenty of other places you can earn from. To get coins, you can get it from any shop, as long as they sell:

  • Groceries (so supermarkets, corner shops, etc)
  • Health items (again, supermarkets, as well as pharmacies, convenience stores and more)
  • Beauty products (you know the score)

Whether it’s a cash and carry, a pet shop, toy shore, off license, discount shop or whatever else, you’re good. They specify Sainsbury’s, Superdrug, Lloyd's Pharmacy, Wilko as examples, if you still aren’t sure.

For spins, on the other hand, you’re looking at most other specialist shops – ones that sell:

  • Clothing
  • Home improvement
  • Books
  • Office supplies
  • Sporting goods
  • Electronics
  • Most other tangible things

Examples they give here are H&M, Waterstones, Currys, Homebase. You get it. Why they split it this way, I’m not sure, but just know that if you’ve bought something that you can put into a shopping bag and can receive a receipt for, you can earn a bit of money from it.

What's in it's for You?

A little extra change. Look, you may as well. There’s money to be made here.

What's in it for Them?

Data. Lots of data. Do you know how man survey companies wish they could just turn to something like this, instead of writing up new questionnaires about shopping habits? Being able to see exactly what individual people are spending money on is valuable. Properly so. Whoever they’re selling this information onto can’t believe their luck.

There’s even an option that allows you to share your online purchase information, in return for them being able to read your emails. I’m not even saying anymore about that, because I’d advise no one takes part in that part of it.

What’s My Experience with Receipt Hog?

Hover your phone over the receipt, take a snap, click to say who went with you, done. Tiny bit of cash in your pocket. Easy stuff. They really have made the process as efficient as possible, so it will keep many engaged. The problem with it, however, is that you barely get anything out of it.

I’ve been signed up to Receipt Hog for a couple of years, and have had a couple of pay outs. A couple. It’s a proper slow burner. Despite the fact they’ve made it so easy to upload images of the receipts and log them into the system, as B from Boost My Budget mentioned in her post, actually going through that process feels like a chore. When there’s so little reward, you shouldn’t have to dread doing it.

At least once a week, one of the receipts won’t log, and it feels like too much effort to re-upload. Even as someone that isn’t a regular shopper – someone that spends quite a bit for retail arbitrage and whatnot – it doesn’t put me at an advantage. In fact, it works more in my favour to spend £9.99 at a time. Even if you split up your spending to maximise the amount that you earn, you’re putting too much mind power into the app. Really, you are.

The Hog Slots are a nice feature. Every now and again, go through and see if you can earn yourself a few extra points. If you opt to do these every month, you will probably win something. Weekly, and you might get disappointed. This is perhaps the one thing able to keep you hanging in there.

For those that are new to making money through everyday tasks, go for it. You are actually going to make money here. It’s just that it’s going to take so long to see it come through, that I think you’ll forget about it before you get to redemption levels.

Is Receipt Hog a Scam?

Define scam for me. Receipt Hog pay out for real. There are rewards aplenty. I just think better of you.
