Context

I’m a projects person, so I need to be building all the time. Most of these concepts start with something online. It could be a website, some fancy content, or money-making scheme of some sort. That’s just me.

I moved home in a rush. Let’s blame Langley Russell for this. In this rush, one vital component wasn’t taken into consideration – how swiftly we can move broadband from one address to another. A week would be long enough, we thought. When you’re heading to a new build, apparently this is unreasonable. This put the projects in jeopardy.

PlusNet said we’d be sorted out in 11 days. Fine, we left it late (because the landlord longed out the paperwork). However, there was a change of plan. The 11 days – which could have been covered with a mobile dongle – were extended. Instead of installing the line on 6th of the month, it would be 26th.

I’ve got unlimited data on my phone, and I have internet at work and that, but restricted internet at home hurts. A month without broadband can’t run.

Plan of Action

At the time, I was just winding down an ecommerce project and planning to get started with one of my stashed ideas. It was time to get started with this one as soon as I moved.

I thought: once we get there, I’ll get big boy mobile broadband thingy then. Sorted. £40. Top up when we run out. Let’s restrict how much we use it. Keep things rolling.

Clapped 7GB of data down in a weekend, didn’t I.

Change of plan. I wasn’t topping up every 2 days, so it was decided another 7GB would have to last the pair of us until. We could only use it for the most essential of essentials.

Even without internet, plenty could be done. It would be good. Less distractions, more focus, so let’s get it. Little did I know that not being able to launch projects would make me lose focus.

A Month (Almost) Without Broadband

Over the course of the 29 days, every day I found myself writing down project plans and emailing them to myself when the day was done. I’d write down broad ideas, domains, half-developed plans and even specific marketing strategies for some of the more complex ones.

It was 2 weeks before I realised I’d been documenting all of this. Below shows you just how dramatically these plans can fly from one place to another, and where I was at by the time order was restored.

Looks like I’ve got six things to work on, so I better wrap this up.
