How to Find Jumble Sales + Tabletop Sales

Car boots put the ‘great' in Great Britain. They are a reseller's dream, and they happen so frequently… most of the year. The remainder of the year is just sad. October-March, it's usually too dark and cold and unpleasant for proper to get up for a 6am boot sale. Even if you’re that motivated to do it, the organisers tend to wind down their operations, and have a bit of a break from it all.

Resellers that deal with second-hand goods often turn their attention towards charity shops over late autumn and winter. They are always reliable and, more importantly, indoors. The other option is to go to tabletop sales, home to the same fun of boot sales, but without the threat of rain and (usually) the need to get up extra early.

As they are generally less frequent, you may need to do more research to find them. Here are a few ways to find tabletop sales near you:

Churches, Supermarkets, Post Offices and Cafes

Local amenities may have notice boards advertising upcoming sales. Once you start looking for them, you’ll probably find that loads have been passing you by.

Twitter

Personal favourite of mine. Type in a location followed by [jumble] or [tabletop] or [village hall] or [charity sale], and you may just come across what you're after.

Facebook

Local groups and pages are prime places to advertise these sales, so it makes complete sense that you can find them this way. If you're not already a member to these groups or liking pages of nearby towns and villages, get on it.

Google

The search engine is full of underutilised features. First is Google Alerts, where you set up email notifications if new content about a certain search query pops up. Tell it to alert you daily if any for any mentions of “peterborough jumble sale” online. The other is hidden in ‘Tools’. It allows you search based on when anything has been published, allowing you to find out whether any mentions of a Peterborough jumble sale have been mentioned in the ‘Past year’ (unhelpful), ‘Past month’ (better) or ‘Past week’ (bingo!).

Gumtree

Every now and again, fresh listings will crop up on Gumtree to highlight nearby jumble sales. It's always worth checking in your local area on Gumtree if the other options fail you.

Ask around

No explanation required. Many of the organisers won't publicise things online. If it's in a town nearby, you might not hear about them while you're out and about, so this may be the only way to ensure you don't miss out.

And Remember…

Sellers at tabletop sales can be much more open to negotiations on prices, making deals than at boot sales. If you tend to let these events pass you by, you could be missing out on all kinds of extra income. Take the time to hunt these down.
