It took until I started buying and selling to realise just how many of my family members have been in this game. It’s clearly something I was destined to do, so it’s a good job I finally fell into it. Since I’ve figured how to do it well, I’ve clocked just how many different opportunities are out there to resell product that I have absolutely no interest in partaking in.

Whether too risky, too big or too much hassle, here are the things I'd rather not sell:

1. Trading Cards

First on the list is the biggest opportunity that passed me by before secondary school. My uncle once went to America and brought back stacks of Pokémon cards that weren’t available in the UK yet. I would have hit the belly if I decided to flog them.

We’re talking 2000/2001 times here, so this is talking years before I had a computer at home, never mind the desire to use the internet to go on anything other than WWF.com or FunTrivia.com.

Pokémon cards were in the in-thing back then and there was so much talk about how valuable certain ‘shineys’ were on eBay. I had a bag of them and went to stuck them all on my walls at home instead of trying to flip them. What on earth was I thinking?

Now, I haven’t got the head space to figure out which trading cards have value and which ones are bait on road. If I come across a large lot of them, I’ll give them a try, but it’s not a world I want to return to.

2. Trainers

As discussed previously, trainers are just bad news. Lots of people make lots of money selling trainers, but people lose lots of money doing it too. I know what it takes to be a big boy reseller in that game and it’s just not something I want a part in.

I’ll do the odd flip of things found at car boots and charity shops, but doing it with the new ones just doesn’t appeal. The margins are too low, unless you have the right connections.

3. Watches

I’m a strong advocate of not getting high off your own supply. Sell something you’d like for yourself and you can easily see those profits slip away. It’s a factor why I stay away from trainers, and it’s exactly the reason I should be able to slip comfortably in watch reselling. I probably haven’t worn a watch since I was 11. I have no appreciation for any watches. I’m a blank canvas.

There is plenty of money in watch selling and with a few months of research, I can see where the opportunities are. I just haven’t had the time to look into it yet.

5. Antiques

My granddad used to have his own antiques shop and still buys and sells from auction houses and eBay. He knows what’s what and knows who to sell those goods to. I might have learned a few things from Cash in the Attic, but I’m not connected enough to get the clientele for the finds. Yes, there’s the online buyers, but I’m well aware about how big the offline audience is.

I can’t see myself getting into this until the buyers are a lot more online-based, as it will simplify things much more, and it buys me more time to learn my way around the game (especially with century-old furniture!)

6. Cars

One of my cousins buys cars, get his friend to fix them up, and sells them on. Smooth process. When found out how much I was making from reselling on Amazon and eBay, he suggested I should use some of the profits to invest in something automotive for a change. Less inventory. Huge potential. Never-ending supply of stock.

Too many moving parts and selling involved for me. I can see how easy it is to develop a process to make a healthy cash flowing business with this, but I haven’t got the resources to make it run for me. It’ll be on my mind for the future though.

7. Event Tickets

When Beyoncé was promoting her self-entitled album (the second-best in her discography, by the way) the tickets for the London and Birmingham dates sold off in an instant. Those ticket resellers were on their job at the time, obviously. In the end I went to the Dublin show instead so can’t get too angry, but I would have had the chance to go to something more local if these people weren’t buying to sell on.

The reason I’ve never wanted to resell event tickets is because of how unfair it is to everyday people that want to go to these shows. It’s a moral line I’m not crossing. Many people will only go to a show a year, and it’s unfair to deprive people of that opportunity unless they pay double.

It’s crazy that I don’t feel the same about most of the things I sell now, and actually rate the people that do this for a living, but it’s not for me. Also – it’s getting a lot harder to do it now anyway, so the best days have probably been and gone.

8. That White

I think that every rapper in the game watched “Paid in Full” in 2015. I’m not saying they hadn’t seen it before, but for some reason, LOADS of them were referencing the film and borrowing the names of the characters. Watch that film once and tell me you don’t want in on the action.

I quite like being free, so I’m not going into the dope game for now. I’ve got two of the wickedest domains to do alongside a venture in this field, but they’ll have to be side-lined for the time being.
