The property market in the United Kingdom is a vibrant industry. However, 87% of the UK population believe that owning a property in the country is cumbersome. In other words, a majority of the adult population considers the UK property ladder a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Among the many issues, it is saddled with many challenges that people have to deal with and here are some common ones.
- Rising prices of property
According to The Guardian, UK property prices rose by 25,000 GBP in the second quarter of 2021. Even that was an 8.5% increase from figures recorded in April 2021. The COVID pandemic and its associated lockdowns in 2020 resulted in a slowdown in property prices. However, with all indications this year, it is clear that the housing industry bounced back, probably with fury.
The increase is not good news for first-time buyers mainly because it adds to the pressure to meet demand. Moreover, with an economic slowdown brought on by the pandemic, people's finances have taken a hit. Indeed, that doesn't augur well for those who lost their livelihoods when the pandemic ravaged the UK. Indeed, the rising cost of houses on the UK property market poses a real challenge that inhibits people from owning one.
- Bad credit
Do you know if you have bad credit or not? Unfortunately, many young people in the UK aged 18 to 24 years do not know anything about their credit status. Living in the country without knowing the state of your credit can be problematic when you finally apply for a mortgage. Unfortunately, this is a reality and a challenge some people have faced and continue to deal with.
Going by what the finance books say, having bad credit automatically means a stumbling block in accessing loans. Even worse, it can pose a real challenge in your mortgage application. Fortunately, even with poor credit ratings, you have the option to seek an adverse credit mortgage broker. In certain situations, though, you may need to meet specific requirements to access a mortgage even with bad credit.
- The trapped cycle of paying rent
Just as property prices increased, so did rent. According to homelet.co.uk, £1,059 is the current average rent in the UK. Since 2018, the rate has increased annually by 1.5%. The rate varies depending on location and other indicators. Moreover, London continues to hold the title as the most expensive place to pay rent.
With high rent and increasing property rates, it isn't easy to get onto the property ladder. Surprisingly, rent is more expensive compared to monthly mortgage payments. Therefore, if you're currently renting and hoping to access a mortgage loan, it can be a steep hill to climb.
Last but not least, another critical challenge preventing people from getting on the property ladder is the issue of additional costs. Buying and owning a property is more than settling the price of the house. There are yearly fees, legal fees and other payments that add up to become even more expensive. Despite all these challenges, hopefully, you can overcome them to own your property.
