So, the New Year is now officially upon us, and New Year’s resolutions are now well underway. Plans are being drawn up for new businesses, gym memberships are being purchased, and a general sense of optimism is still in the air.
Unfortunately, 2020 might not be the year when you have a fresh start and turn things around, after all. But that’s largely up to you – if you approach the New Year with the right habits, and the right mindset, you can set yourself apart from the crowd and really make the New Year shine.
Here are some tips on how to adjust your mindset in order to get a real fresh start in 2020.
- Always take some action immediately, even if only in small ways. Don’t wait until tomorrow
One of the leading things that keeps people from achieving their dreams, and from making a real “fresh start” in the New Year, is that they always put off the moment of taking action until “tomorrow” – or even worse, “next week.”
As the saying goes, though, “tomorrow never comes.” The only way to ever begin making real change is to develop the habit of always taking some action towards your goals, immediately. Imagine that “now” is the only moment you have available.
Of course, it’s not good to be overly hasty and to take massive gambles because of a lack of proper preparation. But no one said you had to take huge, reckless actions right now. Just take some action right now – even if that action is only drawing up a weekly action plan, and beginning some research today.
- Learn to roll with the punches and adjust your plans, instead of throwing them out entirely when things go wrong
One reason why New Year’s resolutions often fizzle out and end up being abandoned — and why people often fail to get the “fresh start” that they were really looking for — is because… plans always go wrong.
Almost regardless of what you’re doing, some unforeseen obstacles are going to emerge and turn your carefully laid blueprints upside down.
An important mindset shift to make is to become comfortable with the idea of “rolling with the punches,” and adjusting your plans as you go along, instead of becoming disheartened and throwing them out entirely when things go wrong.
If your ambitions to buy a new home seem temporarily thwarted, you might want to consider something like a service that allows you to borrow money over a short period to complete the purchase of your home. At the very least, you probably shouldn’t give up on your goal outright.
- Forget waiting to be comfortable, or to “feel like it.” Develop the skill of moving forward regardless
There’s a kind of general myth and misunderstanding that we all subscribe to at one or another point in our lives, which is that the really successful people out there are just especially “driven,” and “feel like” getting things done in a way that the rest of us don’t.
An important mindset adjustment to make, is to realise that most successful people have simply developed the skill of moving forward regardless of whether they are “in the mood” or not.
In the New Year, forget waiting to be “comfortable,” or to be “confident,” or to “feel like working.” Instead, begin to develop the skill of moving forward regardless of all of that.
