One of the most important rules of sales is to “Know your audience.” This holds true whether you’re trying to sell cars, sell a home, or sell a service. When you’re working to make money with online content creation, knowing your audience is a critical factor in making sure that not only is your message getting across, but that it is reaching your audience in the first place. Excellent communication skills are also necessary when you are working with others from different generations as well.

This infographic from Maryville University explains some of the key differences between Millennials and Generation Z as compared to older generations in regards to business communication.

Social Media Use

Billions of people around the world use social media, but not all platforms are used equally between generations. Instagram and Snapchat are popular among Generation Z, while older generations favor Facebook and Twitter. Advertising on only one social media platform may make your efforts fall flat, especially if you’re trying to reach a particular age group.

Communication Styles

While Baby Boomers prefer face-to-face communication, Generation Xers prefer to speak through the phone, email, or text. Younger workers may not even use email often, relying on apps to notify them when someone wants to connect. Using a variety of media when marketing and connecting with other workers is the best way to make sure you’ve covered all your bases and reached the broadest audience.

Direct Mail

Ads in the mailbox can still be an important way to communicate advertisements to potential consumers. Baby Boomers and Generation X respond well to print communication (especially when they include a coupon), but many are on social media and email as well. Younger generations will be quicker to toss that flier into the trash bin.

Web Pages

Up to 85% of adults believe that a business’s website should look just as good, or better, on a mobile phone than it does on a computer. If your site isn’t optimized for mobile phones, you’re communicating to your potential clients. Over half of all online visits to retailers occur over a mobile phone. By making sure your web page is optimized, you’re communicating to your clients and showing them that you are savvy, knowledgeable, and helping them to make a quick purchase from your website.

Video Content

Generation Z is most likely to respond to video content. Producing this type of content may be the best way to reach this audience, who are expected to account for 40% of all consumers by 2020. Investing in quality video production and advertisements will help you get a more significant piece of this rather large slice of pie.

If you have a specific age niche you are trying to reach, you can save yourself advertising funds by only using the type of advertising most likely to reach that audience. However, if you have a broad audience that spans generations, don’t put all your eggs in one basket by sticking to only one form of advertising. Take the time to research the best way to reach your entire audience.
