The following probably applies to private label and print-on-demand sellers more than anyone else. Marketplaces are the perfect way to launch a product. They’re places with established traffic, structure and interest. By placing your products on them, you’re breathing new life into it. Provided you introduce something that stands out/fulfils objectives more effectively than others, you’re going to get seen and generate interest.
Going the solo route with Shopify is good and all, but earning traffic can be expensive. It’s the reason why many private label sellers use Amazon as their primary place to sell their goods (perhaps with a standalone site as a central hub to direct other people to). A lot of print-on-demand sellers concentrate solely on eBay as the place to drive their sales, and don’t even consider other places if their goods are doing alright as they are.
As I personally found with an Amazon-focused private label product, it was tiring just trying to rely on its customers to find the product via tactical keywords and advertising. A few sales came, but not at the desired level. The next move was to list my product on eBay, which was quiet, but allowed me to freely experiment with keywords until I found something that worked.
The real breakthrough came when I decided to give Etsy and Depop a go. The social elements of them – the fact that you have profiles where you can follow others and like products – meant that I was able to get the brand out there for free and get attention without having to invest lots of time into a complex campaign. Once the sales rolled in there, they followed elsewhere. Those sales make the product more visible on the marketplaces they’re on and the cycle continues.
The more places your brand can be found, the more opportunities you have to sell. It’s that simple. I understand that marketing is vital, so there are reasons why you may not want to align your brand with some of the less desirable ones out there (hi Craigslist). But if you’re going to feature your products on Amazon, you may as well have them on eBay. If you’re on there, it’s not going to hurt to put them on Etsy and Depop too.
The number of marketplaces is growing and with every new one there’s an opportunity to flood its site with your products and make more people aware of your brand, Get in the habit of searching for relevant marketplaces that are emerging every few months, and you may find that you come across pockets of people that are highly engaged in the products that you sell.
