I’m not sure where I came across it, but the idea is something that really resonates with me. I’ve said it thousands of times on here that I’m a projects person. I like bringing concepts to life, and I like the idea of creating something that I can sell on/delegate out/remove myself from once it’s up and running.

As someone that has created so many projects, I’ve become increasingly aware of warning signs that I should take something further than my Dropbox. This question – “Could you do 100 tasks for the project?” summarises my thought process for taking on a new project or not.

I use Trello for all of my task management, so I tend to log most of what I do to get each project off the ground. I currently have tasks for every day for the next two months pre-prepared. They will obviously be adjusted based on how each day goes, but I make sure that I stay focused on the priority projects and that all the less important ones are only given the amount of attention they really need.

When I’m in the mood to take on a new task, I’m thinking about so many factors, like:

  • How much money could I potentially make from this?
  • How long will it take to launch?
  • Is there any overlap with past projects?
  • How much of this will I be able to outsource?
  • How much time am I going to have to dedicate to this?
  • How long will this be profitable for?
  • Will I enjoy creating this project?

I think that the final question has become more vital than ever before. The fun factor is what’s going to keep me coming back to it, because I really don’t have the time to take on work that I fundamentally do not enjoy doing. There are so many fun things I can replace it with (and are a lot less likely to lead me to procrastinate through them.)

10 tasks? Fine. 20 tasks? Doable. 100? Calm down.

This question is an easy way to shut down additional projects that are nothing but distractions from the projects that I really need to concentrate on. If you’re also the type of person to take on more than you should, this will really change your ways, so remember this question before it’s too late.
