If you constantly find yourself afraid to open your bank statement, it could be time to make some changes. Saving money definitely isn’t an easy thing to do – it takes will power and self discipline. But you can make some life changes to get yourself there too.
Put Aside Money First
First and foremost, it’s time to start treating your savings account as though it’s a bill. You pay your bills as soon as you get your paycheck, so it’s time to start doing the same thing with your savings account. When you get paid, immediately transfer over a certain pre-agreed amount to your savings account, and don’t touch it after that unless you really need to. A lot of people wait until the end of the month to put money into their savings accounts, but that often means that they spend more than they need to and therefore they save less than they should. Make your savings account more of a priority in your money life.
Try Investing Your Money
When you hear the word ‘investing’, you may think of investment bankers wearing flashy suits and shouting at people over the phone, but that couldn’t be further than the truth. You can invest your money in yourself as well as in stocks and shares and Bitcoin (if you’re curious about that, check out an expert like Andrew Chambi). It’s okay to invest in your future, in training classes, in suits that will get you through interviews, in travel to networking events where you can meet people who will get you further in your career. It’s also a good idea to invest in your financial future as well as your future career. Don’t forget your retirement fund – you will be incredibly grateful for it one day.
Cut Down On Your Outgoings
The best way to save money is, unfortunately, to stop spending it. Take a look at your regular outgoings and work out what exactly you can cut. If you make a habit of spending a lot of money on food, going out to eat and purchasing takeout and buying coffee in the mornings before work, it could be time to change that. Start meal planning instead and making your lunch before you go to work and you’ll save plenty of cash. If you go to an expensive gym, why not consider taking a break for a few months and doing some Yoga With Adriene or jogging instead? You don’t have to quit doing things you love to save money.
Quit Those Impulse Purchases
Finally, it’s time to stop buying things for the hell of it. If you have money in your pocket it’s always tempting to plunk it down whenever you see an item in a store that you feel like owning, but that is probably costing you a lot more than you realise it is. When you see something you like, wait for a month. If you still want it then, you should consider buying it if you have the money. Otherwise, you never really wanted it in the first place.
