Most people discover new musics by following their favourite bands on social media or by listening to the radio’s latest Top 40 lists. That’s all well and good, but you don’t know what you’re missing by sticking with these methods. There could be an artist out there playing music you could really enjoy, only you haven’t found them because they’re not playing on the radio or they don’t have as big a following as most mainstream artists. If you’re looking to branch out from your usual playlists, here are a few leads to help you discover your new favourite band.
Use your favourite bands
All bands like to talk about which musicians inspired their music. Look on their website or wikipedia page and find out which singers and bands they listen to. If nothing else, you may learn that you have something in common with the lead singer of the band.
Streaming
There’s a chance you’ve already discovered some new tunes by browsing the playlists that Spotify has made for you based on your listening history. But sometimes the algorithms can be a bit hit and miss, and it’s too time consuming to wade through every recommended playlist to find something decent. However, don’t give up on streaming altogether. Lesser-known streaming sites such as indiesound.com help new artists promote their music, so chances are no one will have heard of them yet.
YouTube
YouTube is better than streaming because it gives you unlimited access to any music video, whereas streaming sites mostly offer songs and artists that are currently trending. YouTube is also where a lot of artists are making their debut, because they don’t need to pay any money to put up a video of their performance.
Attend Open Mic nights
Playing at an Open Mic night is another way for budding artists to get their music out there. You get a night of mostly free entertainment (usually at the low cost of one beer), and they get an audience to showcase their new material. Most of them might just do cover songs, but you can still get an idea of what they’re like as performers. If their style of music appeals to you, ask if they have a website or album to sell. Even if they don’t have anything recorded yet, they’ll let know you if they have something in the works. You could be one of their first customers, and they will love you forever.
Word of mouth
Regardless of your own personal tastes, there is bound to be another music enthusiast in your group of friends who will be happy to give you some recommendations. Of go to a record store and consult the experts. People who work in the music store don’t just sit behind the counter and take your money; they actually know more than a few things about music. If you tell them your usual tastes, and mention you’re open to listening to something new, they will be happy to make some recommendations.
