Door-to-door marketing seems to have been pushed into extinction by digital marketing systems. It may be making a comeback, especially now that many people will be staying and even working indoors long after the pandemic passes.

Door-to-door marketing has never been easy. However, you can still make sales if you put your marketing skills to use. Here are four tips to get you started:

1.      Learn to Read People’s Body Language

Some people will directly reject your propositions, but many people are polite and may choose to tolerate you. However, this doesn’t mean that they will buy whatever you are selling. They have to go along with you until you give up. However, their body language will say everything about how they feel.

One of the downsides of D2D marketing is that it takes a lot of time. It can also be challenging, especially when you run into hostile or impolite (or just cheeky and mischievous) customers. Some of these customers can be so discouraging that it makes you look and feel miserable, compromising your other sales.

Reading your customers’ body language will help you choose your battles. You can tell which customers are not going to buy and save yourself some time.

2.      Solve Problems Instead of Being Convincing

People are polite, but that doesn’t mean that they will buy your products/services. What’s more, their politeness will quickly vanish if you come off as persistent. As such, don’t focus on convincing your potential customers to buy.

Instead, motivate your prospective customers to buy by demonstrating how your products/services can solve their problems. The golden rule is the same with D2D marketing: the customer’s needs come first.

3.      Be Brief & Presentable

No one will open their door to an unkempt person, and everyone expects a salesperson to be neat and presentable. Being presentable is the first step to getting your potential customers’ attention. Presentation is also necessary for getting enough time to make your case and close the deal. As such, be presentable and confident.

Additionally, be brief in making your presentations. People have other things to do, and you stand a better chance of making a good presentation if you don’t string yourself along.

4.      Follow Up with Potential Buyers

No one has a 100% sales record when it comes to door-to-door marketing. However, you will enjoy many successes if you play your cards right. You will also come across people who would be willing to buy from you in the future. There is an opportunity for building a loyal customer base, so follow up with these prospective customers.

Don’t be shy to knock on the same door twice. Additionally, send your prospective customers direct mail marketing cards to let them know about new deals.

Final Thoughts

Door-to-door marketing works, and there are new opportunities to sell to people who are tired of being cooped up indoors. As such, put these tips into practice to improve your chances of closing the deal next time you knock on a customer’s door.
