Lockdown-Proof Ways of Making Money

We’re here. It’s here. We’re not going nowhere. Loads of us need more cash now. I’ve spoken about it so many times, but income diversification is just so essential. This pandemic situation has taught everyone that that no income is guaranteed. Employment doesn’t necessarily mean security and we all need to make a better effort with savings.

I’ve been diversifying my income for a good while, and I can say that times like this really prove how essential that is for my overall wellbeing. Living in London, I don’t know if 80% of my salary (paid at some point in the future) would have cut it. Now I’m lucky that I now live elsewhere and have a lot more personal control over how much I get paid.

I’m also fortunate to have clients, friends and sites in a whole load of different industries, which gives me an insight to how online behaviour has been impacted by this whole situation. For example, I do weekly web traffic reports for this independent restaurant. I’ve seen them go from CONSISTENTLY attracting 2,000 visitors each week to just 50. On the other side, one of my own sites – an entertainment-based one – has been impacted positively by these events.

Enough rambling. Let’s get to the money. The following isn’t going to help you much if you need instant cash, but it will be helpful for those that see this as a wake-up call to switch up the methods they use to create side income.

These are what I see as lockdown-proof ways to make money online:

1. Blogging

Blogging – unlike social influencer work – has largely been consistent through this. Sponsored post opportunities, advertising revenue and whatnot are and will still be there through events like this, because a lot of the infrastructure remains intact. The niche definitely matters. I can imagine that there are lots of blogs that aren’t getting as much traffic as they usually would, but so long as you’re giving value to your readers, you’re going to have more visitors at a time like this.

If you still haven’t started a blog, you need to just crack on with it and get started. There are just too many reasons to blog.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Sort of linked to the last one, affiliate marketing is a field that can flourish at a time like this. Those that rely on affiliate commission from recommending travel destinations aren’t going to be having the best time right now, but there are so many information products, digital tools and resources that will still be in-demand.

The skills that you acquire through digital marketing can benefit you in so many other fields, so it’s always worth reading up on it and seeing how you can incorporate it into any projects that you already have on the go.

3. Courses

With kids off school, gyms closed and so many people facing employment insecurity, so many people will be turning to online courses to help them get through this period. I’m jealous of those that have created online courses and will now be reaping the rewards without actually having to do anything – even years after they published the material.

Most of the online courses I’ve taken have just required a time investment by the tutor. They are often created by people that have experience in a particular field, and know how to give clear instructions so that someone else can follow through and either gain certain knowledge or be inspired to take action.

4. YouTube Content

I’m hearing that although music streams are down, music video streams are way up. Passive consumption is going down and is being replaced with active consumption. That’s just one example. With so many people unable to work or being offered the chance to work from home, they will inevitably use reliable entertainment sources like this more than usual.

Having content on YouTube – online assets – you will have something monetisable that is completely unaffected by what the rest of the world is doing. There are too many different directions you can take a YouTube channel, so it’s up to you to figure out the most suitable direction for you.
