Earning money online is one of the most exciting parts of the internet to date. Yes YouTube is great, and the useful facts we all love and learn are awesome, but being able to earn money using your skills in the comfort of your own home is the most insane of all. It’s something we should all be doing – even if you work full time.

If you have a hobby or a skill, there’s no reason why you couldn’t top up your earnings in your spare time. If it’s something that you’ve been thinking about doing for a while now, but you’re not sure how to get started, these five steps to getting your finances in check should set you off on the right track.

Do Your Research

First up, research is key. It’s okay to get stuck in if you’re too impatient to wait, but by reading up before you get started, you’ll be able to figure out the best ways for you to make money. Maybe you can write and you want to utilise your skills online? Or maybe you’re great at making music? Either way, take your time to read through our earning section to find out your options. Then, when you feel comfortable with all the facts, you can make your choice and start.

Set a Target

When you first start to see money coming in, it can be exciting. But it helps to have a target – even if you’re just doing this as a side thing and see any extra dollar as a plus. When you have a target to work towards, you have a goal to keep pushing. Every time you get paid, you’ll want to work for more. Having a key number in mind is a great motivational factor, whether it’s £10 or £10,000.

Check Your Debts

Now that you’re earning more, you might want to start thinking about whether that money is technically yours or not. Yes, it’s yours, you earned it, and it’s sat in your bank account, but when you have debts, it might be best used to pay them off. Or, maybe you’re looking to strike them off and start afresh. Either way, now that you’re earning a bit more, it’s a good idea to decide. Coming up with a payment plan or talking to insolvency practitioners can help you to make the right choice here.

Start Saving

Money is coming in, debts are diminishing and now, it’s time to think about savings. Why are you looking to getting your financial life in line? Are you looking to buy a house or go on a trip of a lifetime? Maybe you just want money behind you for financial security? Either way, the money that you’re earning now is an extra, so treat it that way. If you don’t need it for rent, put it in savings. When the money piles up, you’ll be glad you did.

Outsource

Earning, spending, saving – it’s all going on. But now that you’re reaching that target with your skill monetisation, should you outsource? You might want to think about adding more people into your money-making ideas? Maybe you could offer an extra skill like graphic design to go with your writing and hire someone to do it? Or, maybe you’re taking on too much work and it’s time to get additional freelancers to help you? Outsourcing can not only save you time, but money in the long run too – especially if you’re on your way to online-earning based financial freedom.
