If you have a spare room in your home, you may be sitting back and wondering exactly what to do with it. While putting in a spare bed and having a guest room or creating a personal office space is all well and good, creating your very own games room may seem like a much more appealing option! Besides, your guests can always sleep on the sofa! Creating your very own games room requires a few different elements which we will take a closer look at here.

Use the Amount of Space You Have Wisely

If you aren’t blessed with a huge amount of space, it makes sense to use what you do have as wisely as possible. Create a plan so you make the most of the space that you do have. Obviously, you will have a wishlist of everything that you want in there, whether you are a ping pong fan or want to play foosball on a solid table. Be wary about overfilling the space that you do have with activities. Be aware that every game table will need around 3-5 feet of extra space around them, so get your tape measure out.

Try Some Space-Saving Techniques

If you simply don’t have the room for a full-sized pool table, for example, consider getting a smaller version so you can still enjoy the game on a smaller scale. If you want to have a TV in the room, think about mounting it on a wall so you are not taking up any valuable floor space. The layout is extremely important, so think about any other ways to maximise the space that you have.

Remember the Lighting

Many people choose to have their games room in a basement or other dimly-lit area, in which case the right lighting becomes doubly important. Try to position the lighting so it illuminates your games, without causing too much of a glare. Every table should be under the glow of task lighting, while you will probably also want ambient lighting to brighten up the rest of the room.

Select the Right Furniture

Ultimately, this will be a space where you can unwind and escape from the rest of the world, so you want to make sure that the furniture that you choose is both comfortable and practical. If you want the room for video gaming, consider some specific gaming chairs that have been specifically designed for that use. You could also consider some furnishings that double up as seating such as ottomans or stools. This makes it easier to rearrange the layout of the room if you feel like it.

Consider Soundproofing the Area

Let’s face it; when you are in a games room, things are bound to get more than a little competitive and noisy! Minimising the sound levels can be achieved in numerous ways including upgrading the framing, adding insulation and installing sound panels. It all depends on how much of a priority this is, and whether there are other people in the house that you risk upsetting!
