Want to know how to accelerate your gym gains ahead of the summer months? Then check out these four little-known secrets down below:
Group Training
When it comes to training in the gym, a lot of people think going alone is the best way. While this may suit you as you like getting things done with no distractions, you could actually see more gains with group training.
How?
Well, there are many ways in which group training can benefit you more than training solo. For one, you get extra motivation from the other people in the group. Everyone is working hard, and you want to push yourself to keep up with everyone else or be the top dog in the group. Secondly, if you train somewhere like Evolve Fitness, then you’ll be in groups that are run by professionals with years of experience. What does this mean? It means you’ll be taught how to do each exercise properly, meaning you get the most muscle activation possible and free yourself from injuries that could put you out of action and jeopardise your gains. Furthermore, if you ever sign up for group training sessions, then you’re getting a schedule to follow as each session will be on at a certain time during the week. This helps you keep up with regular training, which is the best way to see quick results.
Proper Posture
You may not believe this, but proper posture can impact your gym gains. A lot of people workout with poor posture or don’t take the time to fix their posture as part of their exercise program. We live in a society where everyone is always sitting down, usually with their shoulders rounded forwards and their head pushed far forward too.
But, why is this bad, and why does good posture help with your gains?
Well, bad posture is bad as it can cause so many muscular imbalances in your body. It can cause your upper back muscles to get really loose and weak, as well as your abs, glutes, and hamstrings. If you improve your posture and walk around with proper posture, then you will see a whole load of benefits. For one, you’ll strengthen some essentials muscles in your back, legs, and abs. This then means you can improve your strength on certain lifts that involve a lot of these essential muscles. For example, squatting with good posture will help you see better leg gains than if you squat with poor posture. Furthermore, you can avoid bad injuries in joints like your knees and shoulders which could cause you to stop working out and require lots of time to recover and return to full fitness.
Tempo
There's a big problem many people have when they lift weights. No matter what exercise they do, they're not paying attention to the temp with which they're lifting the weights. A lot of the time, people will try and pump their reps out as quickly as possible. Likewise, the majority of people don't take much care in the eccentric portion of each rep.
What does this all mean, and why is temp important for your gains?
The eccentric portion of a rep is the part where you're lengthening the muscle. Take a bicep curl as an example here. You curl it up, and then you have to let your arm straighten out back down, this second part is the eccentric. Did you know that you do more damage to muscle fibres in the eccentric portion of your reps? This means your muscles can repair more and grow back bigger. So, you need to watch your tempo and slow down the eccentric portion of each rep. A good tempo to follow is one second for the active portion of the rep followed by three seconds counting the eccentric. Work those muscles harder, and they'll grow bigger and stronger!
Diversity
Finally, you need to understand the importance of diversity when working out. If you’re doing the same thing, all the time, then your muscles start getting used to what you're putting them through. There are so many guys constantly doing the same type of workouts in every session. They choose a body part, then pick some exercises and do three sets of twelve reps. This may lead to results, but you will hit a plateau at some point.
What should you do?
The simple answer is to mix up your workouts and be diverse with what you do. Every week or so do a different thing, train your muscles in unique ways. This keeps shocking your muscles, and they won't get used to one type of training, leading to more gains!
