If you’ve got a passion for a sport, there usually comes a time when we have to compromise just how much time we dedicate to it. Either we get older and there are fewer opportunities for us to play, or we get responsibilities and can’t justify giving hours just for our benefit. There is another, though, and that is: coaching a youth team. If you’ve got the passion for a sport, you’ll be a valuable voice in the sporting developments of children.
Staying Fit
It won’t be the primary reason you get involved with a youth sports team, but you’ll quickly discover that being the coach of a sports team keeps you fit. You’ll be running around, trying to match the energy of the exuberant youth, which on top of your regular workout routine will give you that extra boost of fitness you need to be at the level you want to be.
New Skills
Unless you’re a manager of a company, you’ve probably not been in a position where you’ve had power over so many individuals. And you’re even less likely to have had power over so many children. It’s different than talking with adults, obviously, and you’ll have to step up your skillset for your commands to be followed. You’ll be stepping outside of your comfort zone, but it will be worth it once you feel comfortable in that territory!
Learn the Art of Encouragement
It’s not easy being a child, and especially in a sports team. You’re going to be dealing with children with all abilities, from superstar players to those who like the sport but aren’t naturally talented at it. How you handle these different talents will be up to you; it’s another one of the challenges of being a coach. Everyone should feel included. If you’re a rugby coach, then rugby trophies should be handed out to everyone at the end of the season. If you’re a football coach, you can applaud individual displays, but you must make it about the whole team overall. You won’t be playing at the very top level, so don’t it too seriously – it should be about inclusion rather than the competition!
Watching Children Develop Their Skills
When you’re in charge of a sports team, you’ll quickly discover that there’s a lot to take pride in. For example, you might find a child who you thought would never be a sports person respond to your coaching and become a good player at whatever sport it is they’re playing. You’ll be coaching and nurturing all at the same time, and there’s a lot of satisfaction to get from that.
Into the Real World
Being the coach of a sports team isn’t just a way to stay fit and involved with the game; it’ll also help you on the outside, in the ‘real world.' You’ll have learned a lot of new skills that’ll also apply to your relationships and working life. You’ll be an improved version of yourself, basically, so why not give it a go?
