Winter is a time for safe driving. It is important to stay safe on the roads during this unpredictable time, and there are many ways we can improve the safety of our vehicles and ourselves to ensure this.

Whether you have an old rust bucket or a new car from Motor Mill , there are things you can do to keep safe on the road, and today we are going to share just a few of them.

Stay home

The best possible way to stay safe on the road is to not be on the road at all. In winter there are several issues that make the roads a real danger to drivers. The roads are slippery and wet; there is much less visibility; and the temperature is incredibly low. When you look at all of these factors together it soon becomes a hazardous place that you don’t want to explore at all. To ensure that you are safe on the road this year, avoid it and stay at home when possible.

Drive slowly

Speed is a big factor in safety on the roads. As you will know from learning to drive, the stopping distance of a car when dry, wet, or icy is vastly different. In winter you need to be even more cautious of speed, and never drive over the speed limit. Make sure that you follow the speed limit and always be alert of others on the road.

Make moves slowly

When driving on a slippery surface, it is important to maintain an air of stability. This means that sudden movements are never a good idea as they can cause your car to slip and slide on the road. When driving, never brake too harshly or accelerate too quickly, and when turning, don’t make sudden movements with the steering wheel. It is better to be a minor inconvenience on the road by driving slowly than to move too fast and risk hurting yourself and others.

Increase distance between cars

We all know the general rule on the road of driving 2 seconds behind other cars. As such, it is important for us to increase this distance a little in the winter to accommodate for a larger stopping distance. It is always a smart idea to give a wide birth to cars in front of you and this will ensure that you don’t crash into the back of them if they suddenly stop in the road or change direction.

Keep moving

In terms of safe driving on a slippery surface, it is always best to keep a steady momentum and avoid start stop driving. When driving on the roads consider driving at a lower speed as to prevent yourself needing to stop behind the vehicle in front. The slower you drive the less likely you will need to stop for people turning and this will ensure that you can keep a steady pace at all times. This is also something that applies when driving uphill; never stop!
