There comes a point when you aren’t really using your car all that much, or it is too much car for your needs. So what do you do? Well, it’s time to say goodbye. Cars are great, sort of like couches with wheels. You drink coffee in the early mornings, there are crumbs of lunches on the run, and the miles clocked up are as much about commutes as they are about adventures.

So when should you consider saying goodbye to your set of wheels?

Condition

If you know that you no longer want or need the car, then you should get it valued by someone like Suttons while it is still in good condition. If you're going to sell something, typically you won’t wait until it is in a poor state of repair, or it needs to be scrapped. The milage will also make an impact on how much people are willing to spend on the car. So to maximize the price you can sell your car for, don’t wait too long.

Size

Before you have a family, a Mini Cooper might sound like a good idea, but suddenly trying to fit a car seat and a pushchair in the back can become such a pain in the butt. As your life changes, and you expand your family, or maybe your kids are grown up and leaving, your car needs a change too. If you are living in the countryside then that 4×4 is going to be perfect, but moving to the inner city you might struggle to use the car as much, and small side roads can be a nightmare.

Running Costs

Some cars are better on longer journeys and others on short ones. Fuel consumption should be a critical factor in any decisions you make about selling your vehicle. If you live somewhere with excellent public transportation links, then work out the cost of your car over the course of a year vs. a travel pass. The travel pass will always come out cheaper, and with no parking fees either.

Big Trips

If you like to go on long car rides, then you might need to consider if it might be cheaper just to rent a car on an ad-hoc basis. Typically they will run you a few hundred for the week. In comparison to the running cost of a car – it’s still less.

If the only time you are using the car is when you are heading off on your holidays, then it really isn’t worth the cost for the rest of the year.

Many people, once they have passed their test, don’t bother buying a car. Although they are great to have, they are very expensive for the upkeep, and unless they are used daily, then it might just be time to consider how much you need one.
