As you age it is paramount to look after your health and wellbeing. When you get older your health starts to deteriorate and you are not able to do as much as you used to be able to. As well as the ways mentioned below it is important you also take care of your mental wellbeing, you can help fight off the early onset of conditions such as Alzeihermer’s and Dementia if you regularly stay social and meet up with friends, you should also be doing ‘brain training’ such as sudoku puzzles or crosswords.

Diet

You must look after your diet as you age, this is due to not needing to consume as many calories. Your body burns calories at a much slower rate once you are past the age of 50 so if you eat too much unhealthy food then it will turn straight into fat and gather in places such as your belly or hips. Being overweight in older age can cause problems such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. These conditions can then lead to more signifiant problems such as high risk of strokes.

You should have a healthy balanced diet that includes drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, that equates to 2 litres of water. The benefits of this is more suppleness in your joints and skin, water is also tremendously beneficial for the brain.

Exercise

Exercise needs to start getting gentler as you get older. You shouldn’t really be hitting the treadmill and running 100 miles in a day, this can put excessive pressure on your joints and you could potentially be facing a fractured or broken bone. 30 minutes of gentle exercise is all you need to stay fit, perhaps you could try yoga or pilates.

If you dont want to exercise on your own you could always think about joining an exercise class, that way you get the physical and social side of things at the same time. You could even make some good friends you can meet up with outside of classes.

Health Checks

Finally, health checks when you are older are very important as they can pick up any nasties lingering in your body before you do. Unfortunately, as you age you are more susceptible to certain health problems such as certain cancers, osteoporosis, and dementia. Having regular checkups at the GP will spot these problems early. Healthcare professionals can also recommend any help or assistance from senior living services that you may benefit from.

As well as your general health it is vital you look after your vision. Your eyes, like everything else, will start to deteriorate over time. If you visit the optician and get check ups for your eyes when you are called for it they can detect issues such as cataracts and glaucoma. By having problems like this detected earlier, the likelihood of your cataract operation going smoothly will dramatically increase, beyond this the risk of complications and extra undue stress will be lowered.

Similarly, you also need to look after your reproductive health. You may have passed the age where you can have children, but you still need to maintain your romantic relationships. As you get older, the main issues with reproductive health are usually down to hormonal changes. Erectile dysfunction, for example, is commonly caused by low testosterone, so you may want to visit an ED Clinic Rowlett, or another clinic near you, to discuss treatment options. Hot flushes, meanwhile, can be caused by oestrogen fluctuations, but these can be managed with medication.

You may find that as you get older you can’t hear as well as you once could. It may be time for some additional help in the form of hearing aids. Hearing aids are painless and they work by amplifying the sound that enters your ears. Unfortunately there may be common problems with hearing aids that will mean they need regular maintenance. One such problem could be that the tactile switches that you use to switch your hearing aids on and off stops working, this will need to be taken back to your supplier and fixed before you can use them.
