Starting your own little side hustle these days can be very cheap. You can use established platforms to sell goods, you can do your own marketing on social media, and you can create your own website and graphics as well. Many of these tasks can be handled by yourself if you’re willing to learn, making it extremely easy to get started with a small at-home business with an online focus.
But as most of us know, it doesn’t really end there.
For example, while many blogging platforms like WordPress offer free services, you’re going to be limited on what is and isn’t possible with a free plan. You could upgrade to a budget plan afterwards for more features and services, but you’ll also be tempted to go for a premium option if it offers even more support and features that could help you make more money. This is just a small example of how many people enter the world of business with great ideas to start a business on a budget but ultimately quit after spending too much of their investment.
So we’ve put together a few tips to help ensure that you don’t go overboard.

Spending on marketing is important, but you shouldn’t go overboard
It’s a good idea to spend money on marketing, but you should remember not to go overboard. To start, make sure you have a rough idea of where you want to invest your time and attention. If you’re looking to improve your search engine optimisation, then you could start with a Google ads agency. If you’re looking to get big on social media, then why not reach out to some influencers to see if you can strike a deal? There are many different ways to reach your audience, but it’s important that you try and focus your efforts on a few marketing avenues first before you decide to establish a presence in multiple areas.
Don't invest in expensive software if there are free or cheaper alternatives
As part of the do-it-yourself nature of a home business, many people splash out on expensive software and services to help them achieve their goals. For example, if you’re getting into graphic design then you might shell out some money for a full copy of Adobe Photoshop. Then you might decide to get Adobe Illustrator for vector work, or you might even consider Office 365’s office software so you can start using Excel spreadsheets to keep track of your finances.
When you’re first starting your business, you should try to ignore any industry-standard software that you hear about. Yes, it’s common to use Excel for spreadsheets and Photoshop for images, but they’re also professional tools targeted at people that make money from their profession. For a small online business owner, you could get away using Google Docs instead for free, or tools like GIMP that still have plenty of image processing power as long as you’re willing to learn how to use the tools. This can ultimately save you a lot of money and help drastically reduce your operating costs, or even make it more enticing to start a business knowing that there are cheaper options.
