There are around 1.2 billion websites on the internet, as of 2017, and not all of them are even active. Some are blogs that haven’t been updated in years, and others just stopped being updated altogether due to lack of interest of the part of the blogger, or their audience. Not to mention all the new blogs that are activated every day. So, if you want to get into blogging, then you have a lot of competition to get your posts noticed. If you want to actually make some money out of this, you need to create a blog that practically screams “Hey! Look at me!” just to have a chance of making some extra cash each month.
Search Engine Optimisation
The first step to a successful blog, is making sure it’s easy to find in the first place. SEO involves using keywords and phrases in your domain name and homepage that are relevant to your blog, and are likely to type into search engines like Bing or Google – these two search engines offer the option of submitting your link onto their platform to improve your SEO ranking. To find out what keywords your customers may be searching check out Google Keyword Suggestion Tool. Google suggests using keywords in the URL, making the site navigation easy, and avoiding long URLs as much as possible.
Killer design
We all like things that look good, and your blog should be no different. Even if you plan on drawing people in with interesting content, the visual design of your blog should still be eye-catching. You could use existing templates on WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix to design your website, it might be worth investing in a professional design from a website development studio to make your blog look more interesting, and make it easier for you to use. But you should still keep it simple. A homepage with too many images, videos, and GIFs looks too crowded and visitors to your website won’t know where to look. Yes, your website should be visually interested, but too much visual stimulation will cause people to lose interest, and possibly never return to your website, causing you to miss out on valuable followers.
Update regularly
Whether you post a new article weekly or every day, you stand a better chance of winning over your readers if you update your blog consistently. In fact, once your regular readers catch on to when your usual post date is, you’ll find that this is the day your get the most web traffic. If you have trouble coming up with topics to write about when you’re due to update your blog, you might benefit from coming up with a list of topics a few weeks in advance to help you plan ahead. Alternatively, you can stay updated with news within your industry and make some personal comments in response.
You can engage readers with your compelling content and your useful advice, but make sure your blog attracts attention in the first place.
