No matter what industry you work in, it’s good to have smart clothing for when you need it. Whether you have to wear it every day or just for interviews or meetings, you should always make sure that you have an appropriate outfit on hand. 

When you are meeting people for the first time, the first thing that they see is your clothing. Therefore, you want to make a good impression. But you still want to be comfortable – so it’s a good idea to try on the outfit first before heading out to the event. Laying the outfit out the day before the meeting/interview will make you feel more at ease and ready for it. You also need to make sure that everything fits correctly and doesn’t distract from your personality.

So how do you dress for business success? 

Well, firstly, you should invest in a fitted suit. Now, this suit doesn’t need to be a designer suit or cost of thousands of pounds. But it should be formal enough that it gives off the right impression. A grey, blue or black suit is suitable for any formal event, paired with a suitable tie (nothing with a loud pattern) and polished shoes. If you are heading to a meeting that’s less formal, then a smart jumper or a smart shirt with jeans might be more appropriate. The formality of your outfit will depend on the business that you are in – for example, if you are a digital designer, a pair of jeans and a shirt paired with trainers will be suitable. Whereas if you are (or want to become) a lawyer, it’s essential that you stick to wearing a suit. If you really want to push the boat out, invest in a quality pair of cufflinks. Cufflinks are a great way of showcasing your personality, whilst ensuring that your outfit is still formal.

For women, a blazer, a formal top, smart trousers and comfortable shoes will do the trick. For an interview, you should try to always dress formally – but if you work within an industry that’s a little more casual, you can also dress a little informally for meetings. A jumper/shirt with a skirt or jeans is appropriate if everyone in your workplace wears the same. 

In order to succeed in business, it’s essential to understand the importance of dressing for the job that you want. Now, this is more crucial in interviews, but if you want to continue to be taken seriously within your workplace, you should try and retain a sense of professionalism with your work attire. 

You don’t want to lose out on a job because of what you are wearing. You want to go into that job interview feeling confident and ready to show your interviewees what you are made of. So if you are still unsure as to what to wear – if it’s for interviews, research thoroughly before you go. If it’s for a meeting, ask about the formality before you attend.
