Blogging is a fantastic gateway creative process that can introduce you to a lot of things. You can use it to get popular on social media, you can use it to advertise your products, you could use it to fuel your passions and some people even use it to make money. If you’ve tricked yourself into running a blog in the past, then you’ve probably abandoned it at some point or, if you’re resilient, you probably still run it and occasionally update it with content.
But how can you turn your blog into something greater, not just a place to rant about your daily life to a handful of readers (if any) who don’t always respond?
Making profit from your blog
Making money from your blog is a possibility, but only if your blog has some relevant content that people actually want to read. For example, you’ve probably seen loads of those “top 10 list” blog posts that list 10 random things or items related to your search, and all of those outgoing links are bound to some kind of referral on a site like Amazon. It’s a cheeky way to make money (mostly because many of those authors haven’t even used those products) but they’re still useful to consumers and it makes them money. Here are a couple of other ideas on how to make money from your blog.
- Reviewing products is a great way to make some profit, especially if you have an Amazon affiliate link to give to your readers to support you, or if you can get review copies of a product
- Selling or advertising an eBook is a good way to make money if you have some kind of professional skill you can teach to others
- Blogging about another service can work if you have a company or a freelancing business and you use your blog for the sake of discussing your thoughts or showing works in progress
- Becoming a social media guru also works because if you’re popular enough, you can get plenty of sponsorship and endorsement deals that can generate you income without doing anything at all
None of these ideas are easy, so make sure you do your research and take some time to properly analyse your options.
Using different forms of media
A fantastic way to grow your blog is to use other forms of media such as video, images or even just audio. With a camera and microphone, you could transform your blog into a YouTube channel or even link the two together and do different forms of content. If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution for a vlogging camera, then these are the most practical models that you could buy with your money. Here are some ideas for how to improve your blog using different digital mediums.
- Images can be used to create a digital web comic or infographics for something you are involved with. This is great if you’re a digital artist or a designer who’s looking for more exposure
- Audio from your microphone can create podcasts of your blog or topics that you enjoy talking about. Keep in mind you’ll need a clear voice and plenty of practice before people will enjoy listening to your voice and hear you talk about things
- Video can be recorded and uploaded to your blog or YouTube as a form of vlogging. You can’t be camera shy if you go this route!
These are just a couple of examples of how you can turn your blog into something better. As long as you put out consistently good content, you’ll find it easy to incorporate all different types of media into your blogging strategy and grow your reader base.
