You work out hard several times a week. You have had a fitness plan put together by a personal trainer. You feel the burn after every workout. But, for some reason, you don’t see the results you had expected. Could this be because you are committing a post-workout sin? Read on to discover some of the most common post-workout mistakes that are undoing your hard work in the gym.
You do heavy chores once you get back from the gym – Doing chores while you are pumped up seems like a good idea. However, your muscles are already tired from the lunges, leg extensions, and the other exercises you have been doing, so putting extra strain on them is not a good idea, especially when you are undernourished and/or dehydrated from your workout. Whether you are pulling weeds, climbing ladders, mowing the lawn, or tidying the house, save it for your recovery days, or at least give yourself a few hours of rest before diving straight in. It is much better to do such chores while you are at full strength.
You don’t refuel correctly – You need to eat and drink after your workout, preferably within half an hour of finishing. Pack some healthy snacks and take them with you if you have commitments after the gym. Make sure your snacks contain some complex carbohydrates to replenish energy, a little bit of fat, and protein. Good options include yogurt, fruit, almonds, and a turkey sandwich on wholemeal bread.
You become a couch potato – Yes, you shouldn’t engage in heavy chores after you have got back from the gym, but you also shouldn’t laze about either. Light activity is the best recovery tool, as it ensures your blood keeps moving, which refuels your body and aids your recovery.
You stay in your gym clothes – It can be tempting to go home in your gym clothes and fall asleep on the sofa, but this is very ill-advised. Soggy clothing is the ideal environment for bacteria. It does not matter whether you can shower straight away or not, you should still change your clothes, as this will keep your muscles loose and warm. This helps the recovery process after a workout because it promotes good circulation.
You skimp on sleep – You can go to the most wanted gym center in the country, but if you fail to get enough sleep, you won’t see any results. Sleep is critical for your body to recover, as it helps to heal and build stronger muscles.
You forget to stretch it out – Last but not least, a cool-down period is essential after you have been working out. If you don’t stretch it out after your gym session, you will feel extremely sore the next day, making it difficult for you to resume the progress in the gym you made the day before.
If you avoid the six post-workout sins that have been mentioned above, you should see better results from your workouts. Don’t do all of the hard work in the gym and then undo it the moment you leave.
