Experience a different culture and way of life

Studying abroad gives students to opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture and experience a different way of life first-hand. It is an enriching experience that will see you try new foods, meet new people, visit new places and learn about and understand a different culture to yours. You may even learn a new language.

Learning a new language

Learning a new language deserves a heading of its own. Moving to a country where the spoken language is not your first language is one of the best ways in which you can learn a language. Living and studying in a different country will afford you one of the best opportunities to learn or improve another language.

Travel opportunities

Living and studying in a different country will give you the opportunity to travel around and explore not only your host country but potentially so much more. If you are studying in the USA then you can travel around and explore parts of North, South or Central America with greater ease. If you are studying in the EU then you have the whole of Europe on your doorstep, the majority of which can be accessed in just a few hours.

Things to consider

If you do decide that becoming an international student is the path for you here are some things you will need to consider.

Visas. Every country will have its own set of rules and visa requirements when it comes to students. For example, if you want to study in the UK you will need to meet certain requirements and achieve a particular number of points for the points-based system. This now applies to EU nationals following Brexit. If you are in any way unsure about the changes to or the requirements of the visa process it is always advised you speak with UK immigration solicitors. Whatever country you look to study in then consulting with national immigration experts is essential.

Language. There may be language requirements. If, for example, you intend to study in an English speaking country then you may be required to pass an IELTS exam. This is an English language test for study, work and migration and is designed to ensure you have a competent command of English to complete your studies.

Finances and fees. International fees do not come cheap and international students commonly pay more than their national counterparts. Moreover, you will need to be able to provide financial proof that you can support yourself during your studies and what is more some countries may impose limits on the number of hours you can work. If you want to become an international student you have to ensure you are and can document that you are, financially prepared.
