I remember vividly that I was the second person from my secondary school to (at least publicly) have a MySpace account. Joey was the innovator, and I snuck in there after. I loved it. My favourite part was filling out the music section, and basically just writing a list of every single musician I liked listening to (as if anyone cared that much).
It was my first introduction to social media, and the first time I felt as though I had my own chunk of the internet. It was the start of my teen years, I had recently weaned myself off an online diet of solely WWE-based information, and it was just something I liked to do.
Social media just being ‘something I liked to do' isn't good enough anymore, now I fully know the monetary potential of it. Working in blogger outreach for years taught me this, but it became especially clear once Instagram became the hub for the everyday person being able to earn money by sharing who they are, what they do, and how they created the lifestyle they are currently experiencing.
It still blows my mind that we went from a stage in social media where camera phones couldn't take photos that even looked like real people, to the point where thousands of people around the world get paid for their contributions to the ‘Gram. You probably know someone from school that's now monetising their output, when you're still just out here using it to share your holiday snaps.
If you follow this blog, you will probably have some sort of business or want to get your foot in the door. No matter what stage you're at, someone else out there (who is likely going to remain silent and never reach out to you) is going to be following, as you are motivating them to follow in their footsteps. They may be at the very beginning of their journey. Even if you're at step 2, that's a whole step ahead of them, and acts as inspiration for them to get them to that stage.
We know this because upcoming business owners do this all the time. They are constantly looking up to the massive success stories from the most revered entrepreneurs – the type that regularly share information and encourage people to change their lives by taking steps to level up their businesses. These people have huge followings and everyone wishes they could live their lives. By following, they at least get regular reminders of what they can do to uplift themselves.
It doesn't matter where you think that you fit in or whether you consider yourself a ‘traditional' business person, as there's space for everyone online. For example, if you go through a list of accounts that are able to generate hundreds of thousands from Instagram each year, you will find models, athletes, doctors, writers and preachers among the list. Many wouldn't have had any sort of profile or notability before they put themselves out there.
Whether your intention is to become an online authority, if you want to earn brand campaigns or you just want to share your knowledge, social media is a great way to get your voice heard. Don't get caught up on the ‘influencer' name tag too tough, as we all have to start somewhere. Not everyone looks up to the same inspirational figures (like actual millionaires and sometimes even billionaires), some look up to those that are a lot more realistically within their grasp, and they can picture themselves becoming in the next decade.
Share the highs and lows along the way. Interact and network with people. It all contributes towards your growth and holds you to account; inspiring you to keep going. Just like your actual business, you should come up with a strategy for your own personal social media content too. Come up with a schedule, goals and the steps you need to get you there. The chances are that your social media – and everything that comes with it – is going to be the reason that your business reaches its aims even quicker.
