A lot of the people I speak to about starting a blog struggle to get over an initial internal barrier, believing it’s too technical for them. No matter how much I try to convince them otherwise, they’ve already decided that it’s something which is beyond them, and that they won’t be able to get their head around it enough to make it work for them.

You know what I’m going to say next, don’t you? Of course it’s not that technical; not now anyway. There was definitely a time when making, maintaining and growing a website of your own was a complicated process, but we’re way beyond that now.

There are exactly three things you need to know as a minimum to start a blog:

  • How to buy a domain
  • How to purchase hosting
  • Make a website with WordPress

After that point, all you need to do is write. It really is that simple. The rest is intuitive and there are plenty of online resources to guide you through the process.

These days when I’m making new sites for myself, I do all three of these things at the same place: Lyrical Host. It’s a Nottingham-based hosting company with literally the most responsive support I’ve ever come across. Any question I have about anything to do with any of my sites are immediately dealt with by their support team within hours.

If I was a brand new blogger, this level of support would be exactly what I would need to get me prepared to get my idea off the ground.

Once you have decided on the perfect domain, head to Lyrical Host and register it, then they will prompt you to get yourself WordPress hosting to go along with it. With all of that, you’re ready to go. Get writing. Get publishing. You will figure the rest of it out from there.

You don’t need to at first, but you may want to get a premium theme at the beginning. If so head to ThemeForest. Other than that, I can’t imagine you would need much else to get started, so just crack on with it. Before you think about how you’re going to monetise it, just get all of these things sorted and get publishing.

If you’re on the fence with blogging (and I highly recommend it!) and you’re not ready to commit just yet, just remember that when you do get around to it, you need to tick off the domain and the hosting parts at Lyrical Host together in one go. Use the promo code CHIINO to get 10% off your first month’s hosting with them.
