Everyone's in the same boat, so I'm not going to act like I'm special; there's too much content and not enough time.
Everyday, I will take in some:
- Radio
- Blogs
- YouTube videos
- Assorted browsing, including several mandatory trips to Wikipedia
- Social media
- Email newsletters
- A bit of TV
Again, this is the same for most people. I get it. I'll admit I'm a victim of this over abundance of content. There is too much good stuff out there.
I might not be able to break all of this, but I've done well to resist a few things. I nipped these ones in the bud before they had any chance to develop. For example, I've never listened to a podcast that isn't on YouTube or SoundCloud. I've never binge-watched a TV series (since we could do it easily online). But I've replaced all of that with other content, and it's another never-ending mountain of stuff.
I'm going to say my content consumption is about 65% efficient at the moment. (I'm not really tracking this). We're far off fantastic, but I'm going in the right direction. Let's call it the personal content and the business content.
The problem with my media consumption overload is that I can blame it on wanting to learn more, which can fit into both categories. Who can stop me taking one more Udemy course or spending an hour down a Wikipedia rabbit hole? But I completely understand that this is literally adding to the problem.
I'll say my personal consumption is bang on these days. I've learned to curate and refine all of that myself after years of trial and error, but I haven't applied the same to the business end. Yet.
I've decided the best way to consume more content is to make cuts. The main culprit for these issues are online entrepreneur personalities. I had too many duplicates that I'd follow via email list, YouTube, Facebook group and blog. I don't need them all. A bag of them have been axed. It means I'm sidetracked less often and I learn to self-diagnose Shiny Object Syndrome symptoms sooner.
I'm sure most people can save themselves time by multitasking on a lot of the videos they watch and having 1.5-2 times playback on videos they deem essential. If you really want to make a difference, you'll probably want to cut back on the excess you're following too. Remember that they want you to believe you can't do whatever you plan to without their wisdom. Recognise you need to cut out the excess if you want to get to those goals.
Final word: an alternative for a VA that bullet points educational videos for me would be a YouTube algorithm able to identify and skip dead frames of videos. Let's start with every live stream playback that start with 6 minutes of “Can you hear me? Say ‘Yes' in the comments if you can hear me” or “Can you see my face or my screen”.
Tell me if you're doing an email, YouTube, TV or general content declutter.
