When you get up into the online money making field, the chances are that your journey began because you saw someone else claim that they were doing well from it. You may have come across a social media post, YouTube video or a forum and observed, until you found a community of like-minded people.
Let me tell you – I’ve gone through several phases of this, as I’ve become involved in different sectors and industries.
Over time, as you figure out how to follow their formula to success, you’re going to end up comparing your sales/profit/life to that they reveal to you. Along with that person at the top, there are all the followers (of which you’re a part) who you’ll also compare yourself against.
I’m sure pretty much everyone in this world does the same. Towards the end of 2017 I decided that I was never doing this again. I stopped watching all the content from YouTube ‘gurus’, reading blogs, going on Facebook groups, and decided to use all that time to crack on with actual work.
I had convinced myself that I was checking in on them for inspiration, when it was really for entertainment. Never again.
It’s Generally Unproductive
It’s long watching strangers. It really is. While you may be learning some skills and techniques at first, it often turns into an interest in the actual person and their lifestyle. The minute you realise that you’re consuming content that isn’t directly helping you get to your goals, cut ‘em off.
(I didn’t realise at the time that this meant literally everyone I was paying attention to at the time).
They Run Out of New Things to Say
Once you have built up your own knowledge by actually taking part in a particular venture, your experience will soon teach you all you need to continue to grow and build on what you’ve created. I wasted so much time watching Amazon sellers that were literally at the same point in their journey as me, learning absolutely nothing.
After a while, all of the content they create gets very repetitive. It happens every time. Unless they are legitimately innovating themselves, or they’re in a field where there’s constant change (like domaining). A lot of these people just end up recycling content by rewording it and applying it to topical events to keep you engaged.
They Skip Out Important Details
A lot of people that manage to finesse themselves into a great financial position fail to disclose that the real reason(s) why. They might have been able to do so is because of a personal reason that they won’t ever publicly declare. They may have received funds from family, leg-ups by people in positions of power or generally have unfair advantages, or whatever else.
You can’t compare yourself to people like that.
You Know What You’re Doing
Once you have figured it out, you can dip in and out for key details. You really don’t need to consume every single piece of content these people publish for the off-chance that they give you a piece of advice that is going to transform your business. You’re going to figure a lot of these things out yourself through your own experience.
