Domains touch on every single industry, yet the active community of investors is relatively small. That being the case, there are very limited resources for newcomers to turn to if they wish to get involved in domain investing.

From discovery of the domain investing industry to selling my first domain took years, mainly because of fear of blowing my budget. However, if there were more resources there for new investors when I first became aware of the aftermarket, it may have shortened my course significantly.

It’s important to note how many paths there are with domain investing. While some break their way in by brokering deals for others or flipping names quickly for wholesale prices, others wish to invest big from the offset and hope for the best.

DNAcademy

The whole premise of DNAcademy is that the initial cost may be steep for the average person, but the cost of not investing it is even greater. You’re either going to spend all that cash on the course or you’re going to spend that much on bad domains. For those that value learning from a more structured format, this may be the best way to prepare you for your first foray into the domain investing world.

It’s a comprehensive portal – far more than your typical online course – so gives you all the preparation you need to get you ready to take on auctions and begin your domain investing journey. Created by the founder of Domain Sherpa, used to train domain brokers at some of the biggest marketplaces, and recommended by pretty much everyone that’s ever used it, it’s a no-brainer if you have the capital.

After a year of indulging in all the things found below, I ultimately signed up for this and it filled in all the missing gaps I had in my learning to make me properly understand all I needed to know about domain investing.

Just a handful of the things you will learn at DNAcademy

NamePros

NamePros is the most popular domain forum and many helpful figures within the domain investing world share their experiences and insights there. It’s very valuable knowing you can access so many skilled people that, put simply, got rich from selling these online assets.

Whether you just watch the conversations there or use it to get your questions answered, you will build you knowledge by spending some time on the forum. Beware that there are many rabbit holes you can find yourself in, but you will soon learn which sections are going to benefit you most.

Domain Sherpa

Domain Sherpa’s main draw is a weekly show in which some of the most experienced domain investors share their recent sales, buys and debate prices on domains. It’s a great way to get an understanding for what kinds of domains are selling, what specialists value and see what’s on the horizon for the industry.

Just watch as many as you can. While trends change and outside factors influence the value of domains all the time (look at what the Covid-19 pandemic did for work from home, health, home education etc) the same core principals of what make a great domain have remained approximately the same for the past 20 years.

The Domain Social

A breakaway from the DNAcademy version, which created as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, The Domain Social is an informal space for domain investors at all stages in their journey to discuss what they’re up to, challenges they face, and ideas that may benefit others within their field. It’s actually crazy that something like this exists.

If you search through the YouTube archives, you will get a real education on what it take to become a domain investor today.

The Podcasts

Go through TheDomainZone and take your pick from what’s there. I feel like you can learn something from pretty much every domain podcast when you’re new, so just explore and figure out which direction you would like to take your journey. Plus, there’s more here.
