I am very aware that I have a lot of experience that many people won’t have, in terms of my online project building and whatnot. I’ve made a lot of websites over the years, I’ve operated in a fair few different sectors, and I’ve also done consultancy for others which has taken me into completely different avenues. I enjoy DIYing everything to the point that I can hand off the time-intensive work to someone else.
However, not everyone is in the same position. They may know how easy it is to operate an ecommerce site, but the idea of making their own fills them with fear. These days, you have options. If you have the money, you can purchase something readymade for you to take over, saving you a lot of time.
Let’s say you have a £1,000 budget to work with and your plan is to take on a dropshipping WordPress site. Hosting isn’t going to be over £50 for the year, you can pick up a sold readymade website for under $150 on Flippa, and you’re ready to go from there. That gives you a lot of spare budget for use for marketing and advertising.

If you really want to blow your budget on a readymade website that is already generating revenue, you’re going to have to spend a bit more, and have to bootstrap it when it comes to your marketing and advertising. With a premade dropshipping store, usually focused on a niche which already has a fair bit of competition, having a limited advertising budget is really going to make it difficult for you going forward.
Your budget, available resources and your time commitments are all very important factors here. As I know that I can make a site myself, my main cost is time. I can turn around a fully optimised site like this in two weeks, and then I’ll need to figure out how I’m going to push on from there. If you know you will struggle to make a site, reallocate resources so that you can make your target audience both aware of the site and willing to purchase from it.
No matter what your plans are, you need to make sure that you have a proper strategy. It’s all good buying a great-looking ecommerce site, but if you aren’t able to optimise it yourself and find ways to get traffic to your site for as little as possible, no one is going to shop from it.
If you’re new to ecommerce and want your own project to work on, I’m always going to advise that you learn how to make a site yourself. It grants you freedom that you can’t get with a premade site. If you don’t know how to customise it yourself or deal with updates that may have gone awry, you’re most likely going to waste a lot of time struggling to make the site work out, instead of selling – the one thing you thought you would be able to do easily by buying the readymade site in the first place.
